"Temperament, grit and a pattern recognition arsenal have helped me uncover great stocks and outperform the benchmarks in most years."

Tim Moore, CFA always thinks in terms of risk versus reward not only for stocks, but for any major purchases or life decisions.  Over his 20-year career in equity research and portfolio management, he has studied 1,400 stocks, spoken with more than 700 different management teams for companies worth $100 million to $9 billion in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, and developed a pattern recognition framework for dozens of industries and business models.  When on the buy side, he spends up to 25 hours analyzing each stock after days of winnowing down a screening list of more than a dozen stocks to the likely winners that reduce the risk of “stepping on landmines” or value traps. For some, this level of research might seem an exhausting task. But for Tim, it’s a passion that has driven him his entire career, and one that has helped him uncover terrific opportunities early in their growth stages such as Lululemon Athletica at $33 per share, Restoration Hardware at $30 per share, Home Depot at $48 per share and now well-known other brands, including Ulta Salon and Yeti. “Hockey is my favorite sport, so I skate to where the hockey puck is going, not where it’s been,” he explains. “I love digging in with research and solving the puzzle to achieve the best outcome for investors."

Today, Tim brings his wealth of experience to EF Hutton’s equity research team, where he serves as vice president—and his passion for finding those undiscovered gems remains as strong as ever. Tim conducts deep-dive research of stocks to invest in, interviewing the CEOs and CFOs of companies, examining the industry dynamics and trends, building financial forecasts, evaluating valuations, and estimating the risk-reward ratio for his investors and clients. He spends 120 hours authoring each new initiation report for publication and building the financial model.  His experience covering all the sectors for small cap stocks has helped improve both the caliber of those reports and the market cap size coverage at the firm. It is this uncommon depth of research, combined with Tim’s experience in stock picking and work ethic, that allows him to help reduce the probability of overpaying for a stock or permanent impairment of capital.

As he leverages his expertise to achieve the best outcomes for his clients at EF Hutton, Tim also brings with him the best practices from his senior analyst and co-portfolio manager roles at Invesco, Fort Washington/Touchstone, and Rutabaga Capital Management, where he worked on teams that each managed over $1 billion. Prior roles included being the lead portfolio manager of a global equity strategy at Cabot Wealth Management, and belonging to the sell side equity research team ranked #1 by Institutional Investor in 2003 and 2004.  It is rare to find someone so experienced with researching over 1,000 stocks.

Tim holds an MBA in finance from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and both Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designations.
